Eesti Energia will start trading with gas at Lithuanian gas exchange

Estonian state-owned energy giant Eesti Energia became a member of the Lithuanian natural gas exchange GET Baltic; as gas exchange member, Eesti Energia can conduct gas purchase and sales transactions, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

"Similar to the electricity exchange, the price at the gas exchanges emerges transparently, on the basis of supply and demand. It gives Eesti Energia's gas customers assurance that the offers made to them reflect the actual market price of gas," said Eesti Energia energy trade manager Heikko Mäe.

"Besides the market price that emerges in free competition, the improvement of supply security is important. In January, we signed a gas deliveries agreement with the liquefied natural gas terminal in Klaipeda and now the Lithuanian gas exchange is added to that. We have a growing number of alternatives to Russian gas," said Mäe.

Eesti Energia has sold its big Estonian business clients gas alongside electricity for three years. In January this year, Eesti Energia signed supply cooperation agreement with LNG terminal in Klaipeda, based on which, 5.8 million cubic meters of gas from Lithuania is delivered to the company.
