Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics (Unity) met with the President of the European Council, Donald Tusk, in Brussels yesterday to discuss the course of the establishment of the Energy Union, the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, and the negotiations between the European Union (EU) and the United States of America on the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership agreement (TTIP).

The Foreign Ministry informed LETA that the Latvian foreign minister said he was convinced that, in the context of the Energy Union currently underway and in strengthening energy security, it was essential to complete the creation of the internal energy market and ensure diversification of sources of supply. Latvia expects that, during its EU Presidency, further guidelines will be adopted at the March 2015 European Council, which will be focusing on energy security, the internal energy market and climate diplomacy.

Rinkevics expressed hope that looking forward to the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga, all EU Member States will be ratifying Association Agreements with Eastern Partnership countries. The Minister also indicated that the signing of Association Agreements is the next step for the Eastern Partnership. In view of this, the Riga Declaration should be ambitious enough while remaining realistic and with individualized approach towards each of the Eastern Partnership countries.

Rinkevics and Tusk highly appreciated the course of the TTIP negotiations on both sides of the Atlantic and agreed that talks should move forward addressing concrete issues and prospects. The EU and the U.S. should facilitate the course of the negotiations as much as possible.
