Shale gas is not very topical for Lithuania now

Lithuania's Environment Minister Kestutis Treciokas does not think that the country should speed up the international shale gas exploration tender, reports LETA/ELTA.

"We will neither delay nor hurry this issue. We first must learn the opinion of the prime minister and other politicians," said the minister after a meeting with Seimas Speaker Loreta Grauziniene on Tuesday.

In his opinion, the shale gas question is not particularly topical due to the changes in the geopolitical situation as oil prices are low at the moment.

"There is no problem about it: technically, we can announce the tender very quickly, but if no one responds then we will only make fools of ourselves. We must find the right moment when interest in these issues is at its highest," the minister said.

In the view of Minister Treciokas, energy experts should have their word too. "We already have a storage vessel, gas, bioenergy and biofuel projects. Everything must be done in harmony," he said.

The US company Chevron withdrew from shale gas exploration in October 2013, citing changes in taxation, legal and regulatory environment.
