At a meeting with the US Secretary of Energy Ernest Moniz held on 24 February in Washington, Lithuanian Minister of Energy Rokas Masiulis confirmed Lithuania's readiness to purchase liquefied natural gas (LNG) from the USA as soon as US companies start exporting it, reported BC Lithuania's Ministry of Energy.

"The more options we have, the better price we will be able to offer to our customers," said the minister after the meeting.

Lithuania's representatives are already negotiating the terms and conditions of LNG export with US energy companies so that LNG could reach Lithuania without delay once the USA launch gas exports. This is expected to happen in one year.

Lithuania presents itself to the USA not as a small market of a tiny state but as part of a large regional market. "Through the Klaipeda LNG terminal gas exporters will be able to supply gas not only to Lithuanian customers but also to the Latvian and Estonian markets and, starting from 2019, to the Polish and Ukrainian markets," said Masiulis.

At the meeting in Washington, Moniz expressed an interest in the operations of the Klaipeda LNG terminal and discussed energy security issues that are of great importance to the USA. Minister Masiulis presented energy projects under implementation in Lithuania aimed at increasing the energy security of Lithuania and the whole region.
