Liquefied natural gas (LNG) floating storage regasification unit Independence already cost Lithuania EUR 8.24 million in 2015. Everyday an amount of EUR 150,000 accumulates, informs LETA/ELTA, referring to Vakaro zinios.

Meanwhile on 25 February the Constitutional Court will begin scrutinizing whether the terminal's construction did not violate the Constitution of Lithuania. The case will be heard on the request of three applicants – a group of Members of Parliament, the Court of Appeals and Vilnius Regional Administrative Court.

"Nothing would have changed had the Constitutional Court tackled the issue earlier, while the terminal was not built. But all international agreements signed in 2012 are irrevocable because the motto of Arvydas Sekmokas (former energy minister – ELTA) and Andrius Kubilius (the then prime minister – ELTA) was to do everything irrevocably. We will have that big and expensive ship for 10 years, we will be pleased that we are more secure and all of us will pay for it. But what will we do after the ease ends in 10 years and we will be able to buy it? We will have paid a lease that covers the cost of two such ships and we will pay for a third time too! For the same amount, we could have acquired not only the terminalб but a Mistral ship from France. It would be sailing in the Baltic Sea and we would be even more secure," said Arturas Skardzius, Member of the Seimas Energy Commission.
