In 2014, thermal power plant of UAB Fortum Klaipeda, which generates heat and electricity from waste and biofuel, incinerated 135,000 tonnes of biofuel and 141,000 of municipal and industrial waste, reports LETA/ELTA.

Last November UAB Fortum Klaipeda was allowed to incinerate non-hazardous municipal and industrial waste from all across Lithuania. This way the amount of waste was increased to 70 percent of the total amount of fuel to be incinerated, or 180,000 tonnes per year.

Juozas Doniela, CEO of Fortum Klaipeda, said that permission to transport waste from other regions of Lithuania allows to improve the company's efficiency and to retain a competitive position in low heat prices for the residents of Klaipeda. Moreover, the company is pleased to be able to contribute to the reduction of waste management problems.

Per year Fortum Klaipeda generated 354 GWh of heat and 130 MWh of electricity. Heat was sold to Klaipedos Energija and transmitted to Klaipeda district heating system, whereas electricity was transmitted to Lithuania's electrical energy network.

Annually the plant generates around 40 percent of heat needed for Klaipeda consumers. UAB Fortum Klaipeda became waste management object of state importance on 31 December 2014.
