Heat prices to fall by one fifth, once Vilnius, Kaunas heat sectors are reformed

BC, Vilnius, 29.01.2015.Print version
The price of heat should fall by a fifth, after heat sector reform in Vilnius and Kaunas is completed and biofuel, natural gas and waste-fired combined heat and power plants are opened, reports LETA/ELTA.

"The price of heat should decrease () by another 20%, based on the study and analysis carried out by the Energy Institute and according to the calculations of Lietuvos Energija", – Prime Minister Algirdas Butkevicius told the radio Ziniu Radijas on Thursday.

It is estimated that Kaunas and Vilnius consume nearly 40% of the total heat energy in Lithuania. Thermal power plants in Vilnius and Kaunas will start operating in autumn 2016, when the heat season is launched.

Vilnius city should receive EUR 174 million of EU funding to reform its heat sector, while Kaunas – EUR 116 million.

Special companies will be established in Vilnius and Kaunas which will either renovate or build new combined heat and power plants. 51% stake in each of these companies will be owned by Lietuvos Energija.

An international tendering procedure has been announced to find potential partners.
