Estonian Riigikogu European Union Affairs Committee Chairman Kalle Palling said that natural gas supply is guaranteed for at least one year in Estonia, in case of supply disruptions by Russia, LETA/Postimees Online reports.

Last year, stress tests of readiness of European Union's gas systems were carried out, where the adequacy of EU gas infrastructure and supplies was evaluated in a situation where supplies dependent on Russian and Ukrainian transit are disrupted.

"It is regrettable that the information of the Ministry of Economy and Communications may have left a misleading impression to the Estonian public as if when gas supplies are disrupted, we would have gas only for five days. In fact, we will have gas for at least one year," said European Union Affairs Committee Chairman Kalle Palling. "At the moment we simply do not have the procedure for paying for the storage of gas supply, but this is being dealt with," he said as reported by Riigikogu press service.

"We remind the European Commission that each summer two billion cubic metres of gas are pumped into the gas storage facility in Inčukalns in Latvia, and the access to that in crisis situation is regulated by the European Union law," Palling added.

According to the 2012 data, 657 million cubic meters of natural gas per year was consumed in Estonia, which is slightly more than a quarter of the gas reserves located in Latvia.

At its sitting on Monday, the European Union Affairs Committee of the Riigikogu concentrated on the issues of the possible cutting of gas supply and the developments of Energy Union.

The EU Affairs Committee considered it important to move on with the development of regional gas infrastructure object Balticconnector and regional LNG terminal in accordance with the deadlines stipulated in the agreement between Estonia and Finland.

"Supply security can be guaranteed only through effective regional cooperation and by contributing solidarily to the overcoming of supply difficulties. The latter is especially important for guaranteeing supply security in the current situation," Palling said.
