Baltic distribution system operators to synchronize work with Continental Europe

BC, Riga, 15.12.2014.Print version
Three Baltic countries' electricity distribution system operators have come up with a plan to synchronize the three countries' energy systems with those of Continental Europe until 2025, Augstsprieguma tikls informed LETA.

By working in sync with the Continental Europe's energy systems, it will be possible to eliminate the Baltic States' dependence on third countries' unpredictable activities in the energy sector that are subject to legal requirements different from those in Europe.

"This aim is ambitious yet realistic, as it will be jointly supported by the Baltic and Polish governments, public utilities regulators, and the European Commission," as Augstsprieguma tikls, Elering, and Litgrid said in a joint statement.

The first step is a joint regional political agreement that needs to be made now. The next step is a joint political discussion with the European Commission in order to agree on the potential funding sources.

The Baltic distribution system operators have already started their first joint network development projects in order to implement the synchronization project "LitPol Link1" and "LitPol Link2" between Lithuania and Poland's energy systems.
