Education minister candidate’s priorities in Latvia – attraction and quality preparation of teachers

One of the main priorities of education and science minister candidate in Latvia Marite Seile will be the attraction and quality preparation of teachers, she told members of the press yesterday, cites LETA.

She said that this is an extremely important priority for Latvia, as over 40 percent of the teachers working in the country are over the age of 50. ''I would like to ask who will replace these teachers when they retire?,'' she told reporters yesterday.

 

Seile emphasized that the country's competitiveness of dependent on the quality of education. ''On the political level, much has been said that a competitive, high-quality and scientific-based national economic is what is necessary, thus it must be taken into account that such a national economy model only comes from quality education,'' she added.

 

The education and science minister candidate said that she will be able to give a more extensive point of view on priorities in the education sector after she has acquainted herself with the Education and Science Ministry's current priorities in more detail.

 

As reported, Unity's board today decided to put forward the head of the "Mission Possible" educational program Marite Seile for education and science minister.

 

Seile has a master's degrees in mathematics from the University of Latvia, as well as a master's degree from Twente University in the Netherlands in the structuring of educational and training systems.

 

"Mission Possible" is an educational program with an aim to promote education as a virtue in Latvia. Its creators and supporters believe that quality education depends on good teachers. The aim of the program is to make sure that children in Latvia have access to education and the opportunity to evolve their skills.

 

LETA also reported, during a meeting today with the perspective coalition partners in the next government, President Andris Berzins expressed no objections to any of the ministerial candidates.

 

The new government could be approved on November 5 next week.
