Estonian Education Personnel Union Chairman Reemo Voltri said, ahead of the upcoming World Teachers Day, that aging of the teachers is a big problem in Estonia, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

"Based on the statistics of the past six years, we can say that the teachers' age structure has changed and, unfortunately, still in the direction of teaching staff aging. Not that an older teacher would be a bad teacher, however, there should be a balance in school," said Voltri.

While in the 2008/2009 academic year, the share of teachers younger than 40 years of age was 31% of the teachers, now the share is 28%. The share of teachers over the age of 50 years was 39% in 2008, but now the figure is 44%.

There is one indicator that distinguishes Estonia compared to the rest of Europe. It is the high proportion of female teachers – while in the EU, the share of female teachers is 70%, in Estonia it has risen to 86%, according to Voltri.

The World Teachers' Day is held annually on October 5th.
