Teachers could receive a EUR 709 salary in 2015/2016, Education and Science Ministry's Education Department Director Evija Papule said during the Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees meeting yesterday, informs LETA.

Such a sum will be applicable only if the government decides to satisfy the Education and Science Ministry's claim to allot additional EUR 36 million funding in order to increase teachers' salaries by 10%.

A new framework for teachers' salaries ought to be implemented as well, stipulating a 36 hour work week. The current funding would provide only a EUR 603 salary.

One of the proposed frameworks for teachers' salaries – a transition to a full-time employment – stipulates EUR 4.19 per hour for a EUR 603 salary, and EUR 4.92 for a EUR 709 salary.

When asked whether the request to allot EUR 36 million to the new initiative is an attainable goal, the Education and Science Ministry's spokesman Andis Geizans told LETA that the specific framework is able to function with the current funding as well.

Education and Science Minister Ina Druviete (Unity) said during the meeting that the allocation of funding will be a political decision.
