A total of 22,775 first grade pupils are set to begin their first school year in 2014, as the Education and Science Ministry's estimations indicate, cites LETA.

The ministry's forecasts indicate that the number of first graders could grow by 2,000, as compared to 2013. In 2013/2014, they numbered 20,730.

Thus, the number of pupils in public schools would also increase, reaching 199,655, which is about 2,000 more than in 2013.

Since the number of first graders has increased during the past three years, the number of second and third grade students could also increase.

The ministry's estimations indicate that the number of those in fourth and seventh grades, as well as in high schools, will reduce. The largest decrease in the number of students is expected for the twelfth grade – 1,428 students.

The Education and Science Ministry speculates that the total number of school children will grow in coming years, reaching 204,666 students in 2016/2017, nevertheless, the number of first grade students could decrease in these years.

The actual number of students will be available in September.
