Union leader: Latvian parties running in election "have heard the grievances from educators"

BC, Riga, 18.08.2014.Print version
Ingrida Mikisko, who chairs the Education and Sciences Employees Union, told LETA that in reviewing the platforms of the political parties set to run in this fall's election, she views them as having heard the grievances expressed by teachers at protest rallies.

Mikisko points out that many platforms feature something heretofore unseen – promises to raise salaries for educators. In turn, many parties have set "the necessity of heightening the profession's prestige" as one of their priorities.

Most important during the campaign will be the union's talks with the various parties to find out specifically what their stand is on issues pertaining to education, and potential future cooperation. At this time, mutual agreement has been reached with only one party – Harmony Center, the union leader mentioned.
