The Research Council of Lithuania proposed five new National Research Programmes (NRPs) to be approved by the Ministry of Education and Science, reports LETA/ELTA.

The proposed NRP projects are: Modernity in Lithuania, The Society of Well-being, Towards Future Technologies, Healthy Aging, and lastly Sustainability of Agro, Forest and Water Ecosystems. The projects were prepared by groups formed by the Research Council. A total of 46 project proposals were received.

NRP projects should be implemented in 6-7 years. Large scale interdisciplinary scientific research would be financed based on the projects according to their specific fields in order to solve strategic problems of Lithuanian and European societies. Budget of a single NRP would vary from LTL 25 million to LTL 48 million (EUR 7.2 million to EUR 14 million) depending on its goals and capacity.

If NRPs are confirmed, Lithuanian scientists would carry out research based on these programmes in 2015-2021.
