Lithuanian Education, Science and Sport Minister Algirdas Monkevicius and Polish Science and Higher Education Minister Wojciech Murdzek signed the renewed agreement in Vilnius on Monday.

The agreement needed to be renewed because the two neighboring countries’ higher education systems have changed since the existing document was signed in 2005.

"The signing of this agreement today is a signal reflecting further development of our relations. I am very glad that our relations have stepped up recently, and cooperation and relations between our prime ministers and presidents are very active, which once again shows our strength," Murdzek said.

Monkevicius said Lithuania and Poland's "common political trajectory – in the areas of energy, security and, today, education, has much more possibilities after synergetic cooperation in the academic world is also ensured".

Over 1,000 people have had their qualifications recognized by Lithuania's Centre for Quality Assessment in Higher Education after arriving to continue their studies or work in Lithuania since the initial signing of the agreement in 2005.
