Tiit Land elected rector of TalTech

The council of Tallinn University of Technology (TalTech) on Monday elected Tiit Land, incumbent rector of Tallinn University, as the new rector of TalTech, reported LETA/BNS.

Land will take up his duties as rector of TalTech on Sept. 1. The term of office of the rector is five years.


Land has served as rector of Tallinn University since 2011.


Land started his academic career at the University of Tartu by receiving MA in chemistry and bio-

organic chemistry. In 1994, he received his doctor's degree in neurochemistry and neurotoxicology from Stockholm University, Sweden. He was employed as a researcher at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in the United States between 1994-1999.


In 1999, he returned to Stockholm University where he worked as a researcher and lecturer. He was elected professor in chemistry at Tallinn University in 2006. Between 2008-2011, he worked as the director of the Institute of Mathematics and Natural Sciences of Tallinn University. 


In his pre-election platform, Land said that as rector he would base his actions on the mission and the vision set out in the university's development plan 2020. His objectives as rector in the coming five years are to raise the university's academic quality, raise the quality and volumes of academic work, and initiate the drafting of an action plan concerning the principles of the university's internationalization and sustainable development. 


Land was nominated as candidate for rector by a group of members of the Estonian Academy of Sciences.


The rector was elected by the 11-member council of the university by means of secret ballot.
