Estonian govt to give EUR 342 mln to schools via support fund

BC, Tallinn, 09.01.2019.Print version
The Estonian government is about on Thursday to approve the allocation under the 2019 state budget of money from the municipalities' support fund for the operation of general education schools in the amount of 342 mln euros, informed LETA/BNS.

The support can be used for the remuneration of and payment for the advanced training of teachers, principals and vice-principals, for school meals, study literature and operating expenses related to enhanced and special support, the government communication office said.

Compared with the amount disbursed via the same support fund in the state budget for 2018, the sum total has grown by 28 million euros, including the amount earmarked for teacher remuneration by 26 mln euros and the amount earmarked for enhanced and special support by one million euros.

The increase in funding by the government for the operation of general education schools is connected with an increase in the number of pupils by 1 percent compared with 2018 and the minimum pay of teachers rising from 1,150 to 1,250 euros a month for teachers working full-time. Since an amount about 20% bigger than the minimum rate is allocated from the support fund per nominal teacher job, it is possible that the average gross pay of teachers in Estonia will grow to approximately 1,500 euros a month this year, the spokespeople added.
