Most teachers believe their profession is not held in high regard in Latvia

Most teachers believe that their profession is not held in high regard in Latvia, according to a survey carried out by the Trade Union of Education and Science Employees writes LETA.

80.3% of teachers who participated in the survey disagreed with the statement that the profession of a teacher is not considered a prestigious job in Latvia - 49.9%  said they would rather disagree with the statement, while 30.4% completely disagreed with it.


Likewise, the general public also believes that teacher's profession is not very prestigious in Latvia - 39.2% of respondents said that they would rather agree with this, and 16.9% said it was certainly so.


Among high school students, 46.8% agree that teacher's profession does not command great respect.


The majority of those who believe that teacher is a prestigious profession are high school students - 22.2 percent, members of the general public - 15.2%, while among teachers, only 5.4% believe so.


At the same time, the vast majority of respondents agreed that the profession of a teacher was more respected in other European Union countries than in Latvia. 91.7% of teachers believe so, as well as 82.5% of the general public and 77.6% of high school students.


The survey was carried out on the visidati.lv website this past September and October. 1,773 teachers, 502 members of the general public and 352 high school students participated in the survey.
