After lengthy debating, the government today approved a EUR 164 million allocation from the EU’s structural funds, meant for the development the infrastructure of Latvia’s scientific institutions and STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) programs at higher education institutions, writes LETA.

The decision was taken in line with the Science, Technology Development, and Innovation Framework and the Smart Specialization Strategy which state that support has to be primarily provided to those science and research areas that generate high added value products for the economy.

The more than EUR 120 mln earmarked for the modernization of science infrastructure and the EUR 44 mln allocated for the STEM programs are intended as investments in the economy’s most perspective branches and their human capital.
