Estonian government allocates EUR 2 mln to cover costs of Tallinn private schools

BC, Tallinn, 04.02.2016.Print version
The Estonian government on February 4th decided to allocate two million euros from the government's reserve to the Ministry of Education and Research for compensating costs deriving from the implementation of the Private Schools Act to the City of Tallinn in accordance with a court judgement, informs LETA/BNS.

The government allocated two million euros to the ministry to comply with sentences of the Tartu circuit court and the Supreme Court, spokespeople for the government said.

Estonia's top court ruled in January that in addition to the 1.4 million euros that the ministry has to pay the city according to a ruling made by the circuit court, it would also have to pay an additional 681,720 euros, the ruling of the court states.

The Supreme Court in October 2013 found it to be unconstitutional of the state to place on municipalities a duty to finance private schools without setting out funds for that purpose in the state budget.

The city wants the state to pay additional 2.6 million euros to be spent the same way as the two million euros, but at present no such sum is to be allocated.
