Classes in Estonian schools smallest in the EU

Estonian schools have a smaller average class size than schools in any other member state of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), a fresh OECD study the findings of which were published on Tuesday shows, cites LETA.

Estonia has 15 students per class in lower secondary education, compared with 20 students per class in Finland and 24 in OECD member states on average, it appears from the report titled Education at a Glance.

Estonian Minister of Education and Research Jurgen Ligi, who took part in the presentation of the survey, said that contrary to popular notion Estonia has almost the smallest classes among the OECD member states.

"For us very small class sizes are a direct indication of the need to bring the school network in order, so as to ensure a proper workload and motivating salary for teachers," the minister said.
