Latvian PM discusses student exchange with Fudan University in China

Latvian Prime Minister Laimdota Straujuma visited the Fudan University in China on Monday and discussed possibilities of student exchange, the State Chancery informed LETA.

Straujuma met with the university's president Xu Ningsheng and students to discuss cooperation possibilities between Chinese and Latvian universities to strengthen academic exchange of students.

 

During the meeting, Straujuma underscored that cooperation development in education between Latvia and China, as well as China and 16 Central and Eastern European countries is one of the main priorities. The present cooperation includes cooperation among universities, academic exchange, scholarships, research projects, a dialogue on higher education principles and education policy and exchange of researchers.

 

Riga Stradins University is cooperating with the Fudan University in the areas of the traditional Chinese medicine, microbiology and virology, cooperation will be expanded in research, exchange of staff and language studies.

 

The prime minister noted that it is already possible to study the Latvian language and culture in several universities in China, and she voiced hopes that there will be such a possibility also in the Fudan University. At present there are two Latvian students studying Chinese in the Fudan University.

 

In the conclusion of her visit, Straujuma met with students and presented Latvia's geography and economy to them. She said that Chinese students are welcome in Latvia's universities.

 

Straujuma is on a working visit in China. She is scheduled to meet with Chinese top state officials, participate in a meeting of the heads of governments of China and Central and Eastern European countries, and meet with representatives of local companies.

 

Straujuma will return to Latvia on November 27.
