Eight schools of Latvia are ready to enroll asylum seekers

The Education and Science Ministry has signed agreements with eight schools in three cities on providing education for the Syrian asylum seekers, as Latvijas Avize newspaper reported, writes LETA.

Agreements were signed with Riga 93rd High School, Dobele Christian Elementary School, Riga 15th High School, Riga Ukrainian High School, Jelgava 5th High School, Riga Special Elementary Boarding School, Riga Style and Fashion Vocational School, and N. Draudzina High School. 18 refugees are already enrolled in these schools.


Latvijas Avize mentions a 15-year-old Afghani boy who is in the 1st grade at Natalija Draudzina High School. He could neither write, nor read.


The state pays EUR 567 every semester for this boy's studies.


Those teachers who will be working with the refugees, will have to be trained. The training courses will cost EUR 15,800 in 2016 and EUR 7,000 in 2017.
