Last year, free school meals were given to 90,500 children, financial support to buy school supplies – to 80,400.

Schoolchildren are entitled to free meals and support to buy school supplies if average income per their family member per month is lower than 1.5 of the state support income (EUR 153). The state supported income is the basic amount of social benefits used to calculate the monetary social assistance for low income persons.

According Social Security and Labour Minister Algimanta Pabedinskiene, financial assistance to buy school supplies currently stands at EUR 45.6 per schoolchild. "Taking into account changes in prices of goods and services we plan to increase the financial support to EUR 57," she says.
