The Education and Science Ministry, in collaboration with the Welfare Ministry and the Union of Municipalities of Latvia, plans on assisting 5,000 young persons who are out of school, unemployed or are socially inactive, in order to help them return to the education system or labor market, informs LETA.

According to the Education and Science Ministry's representative Sanda Bruna, in 2013, Latvia had 59,500 young persons (aged between 15 and 29) who were without employment and education.

In order to motivate these persons to return to the education system or labor market, the Education and Science Ministry, in collaboration with the Welfare Ministry and the Union of Municipalities of Latvia, has launched a project "Proti un dari" (Know And Do). The project will remain active until the end of 2018, and the funding amounts to EUR 9 million. The initiative is sponsored by the European Union.

Bruna said that in order to implement the project's goals, each municipality will have to attract their own strategic partners, for example, non-governmental organizations, associations, and especially youth organizations, as they would meet the principle "youth for youth". The ministry's representative indicated that active young people would be better at motivating those in the same age bracket, who are inactive.
