Muiznieks becomes University’s of Latvia new rector

Print versionVice-rector of Sciences at the University of Latvia (LU), Indrikis Muiznieks (1953) was voted in today as the new Rector of LU, informs LETA.

Muiznieks, a professor of microbiology, had already vowed to continue the objectives set at LU.
In explaining his platform, Muiznieks had accented that to attract the student body and hold them stable at 15,000, special attention must be devoted to modernization of all studies (major) programs, keeping public interests and job market demands in mind. In this regard, the professor sees as the goal-oriented reward a major influx of undergraduates not only from Latvia but from foreign countries as well.
Muiznieks will replace the outgoing Marcis Auzins.
In the vote yesterday, also vying for the top spot was LU Dean of Computer Sciences Juris Borzovs.
