The overall ranking, four out of five stars, is based on seven categories. The University of Latvia earned five stars in the "Teaching" category, four in "Employability", three in "Research", five in "Internationalization", five in "Facilities", five in "Innovation", four in "Inclusiveness", and two stars in "Specialist Criteria" category.

According to the University of Latvia rector Marcis Auzins, this is an excellent achievement for the university, proving its high standards in such areas as teaching, employability, internationalization, innovation and others. "Last year, the University of Latvia was one of the highest-ranked Baltic universities also in other international rankings, and that gives us a competitive edge on both the national and international levels, the opportunity to draw the best students and lecturers," stressed Auzins.

Among other universities in Europe that have earned four stars in the ranking, there are such respectable higher education institutions as the University of Liege in Belgium, University of Coimbra in Portugal, University of Alcala in Spain. The University of Latvia has fared better in the ranking than Vilnius Gediminas Technical University in Lithuania (three stars) and Vytautas Magnus University in Lithuania (two stars).

The total number of points a university can earn in the ranking is 1,000. Universities rated at 5+ have at least 900 points, universities rated at 5 have 700 points and more, whereas the University of Latvia and other universities with four stars have 550 points or more. The University of Latvia was 78 points short of earning five stars.
