Minister: Latvian schools with small number of pupils won’t be able to employ many teachers

BC, Riga, 13.05.2015.Print version
In an interview today on Latvian Radio, Education and Science Minister Marite Seile said that Latvian schools with a small number of pupils will not be able to employ a disproportionate number of teachers, reports LETA.

With the new salary reform for teachers, the Education and Science Ministry will also determine how many teachers are necessary to implement the national education program, Seile said, adding that small schools will no longer be able to employ a large number of teachers. ''These are part of the structural reforms put forward by the government as part of the new salary reforms,'' she added.

Seile explained that the teacher salary system in Latvian schools is very unfair at the moment, as there is up to a 60% difference in salary for similar work. ''That is why we need these reforms, so that the system is understandable and it is clear for everyone how much and for what teachers receive their salaries,'' she added.

Seile also said that the new salary model for teachers is 97% ready, and that there are just a few small details left to work out. ''All the remaining details should be completed by the end of this week,'' she said.

The politician also reminded that not all the requests from teachers have been taken into account, as they cannot all be met due to budgetary restrictions.

As reported, with the implementation of the new teachers' salary model, at least 70% of Latvia's teachers could see their salaries grow, Seile said earlier this week.

Seile emphasized that the government has promised funding for the new model; all it requires now is to be finalized.
