The head of state noted that the mission of Vilnius University is not only to educate young people or promote scientific progress, but also to take responsibility for preserving and disseminating the Lithuanian culture and developing conscious and mature Lithuanian society.

Grybauskaite said that Vilnius University has always been a European university, just as Vilnius has been a European city or Lithuania a European country. According to her, Lithuania's well-being and prominence depends on the achievements of Vilnius University. Whereas the new rector will be responsible for raising the bar of quality even higher so that students, the academic society, Lithuania and Europe could be proud of the university.

The president said that Vilnius University has accrued high scientific potential and may become one of the most advanced scientific centres in Europe, especially in the areas of laser technology and biotechnology, where scientists have vast experience.

Moreover, the president emphasised that over 30 centres of Baltic studies operate across the globe which contribute to preserving the Lithuanian heritage. Therefore, Vilnius University should take the leading role in consolidating the activities of these centres and ensuring global spread of the Lithuanian language. Grybauskaite wished the university's community that the election of the new rector would open opportunities for scientists in every area.
