Literature Lifetime Achievement Award in Latvia to be presented to Leons Briedis in 2015

BC, Riga, 27.03.2015.Print version
The annual Latvian Literature Award's experts' committee has decided to present the Lifetime Achievement Award to poet, translator and publisher Leons Briedis for his contribution to Latvian poetry, fostering intellectual thought in Latvia, and for the works he has translated into Latvian, informs LETA.

The Special Award – this year for outstanding achievement in literary research – will go to Eva Eglaja-Kristsone for her study (resulting in a book) of the complicated relations in the Soviet era between literary figures in the Latvian SSR and those in exile (U.S., Canada, UK, Sweden, etc.)

The awards will be presented during the Annual Literature Awards ceremony at the Latvian Railroad History Museum on April 24.

The ceremony will also honor award winners in other categories – best poetry collection, best prose work, best new children's literature, best translation, and debut of the year. In total, there are 77 nominees.

The award winners will also receive cash prizes and the prizes itself – the Latvian Literature Award table lamp designed by the "Majo" studio. The main idea behind the design concept is to have a book as a symbol of light, thus exposing the ability of books of literary merit to enlighten the realms of reason, emotion and understanding. The awards serve both as a recognition of contribution to Latvian literature, and as functional interior objects for Latvian writers that symbolically illuminate the map of Latvian literature.

The award ceremony will be streamed at the public media portal "www.lsm.lv" and aired live on the Latvian State Radio.

The Latvian Literature Award expert committee includes literary critic and author Guntis Berelis, poet Aivars Eipurs, poet and translator, magazine "Latvju Teksti" editor Guntars Godins, portal "satori.lv" editor Ilmars Slapins, poetess, literary scientist and teacher Iveta Ratinika, author Dace Ruksane-Scipcinska, book designer Ruta Briede, poet Artis Ostups, literary scientist and teacher Lita Silova.

The Latvian Literature Awards ceremony is the key event in Latvian literature. The ceremony has been held annually since 2001, the main organizers are the Association of Latvian Writers, International Writers and Translators' House, and Latvian Literature Center.
