New book entitled “Environment, Pollution, Development: The Case of Uzbekistan” presented in Riga
State Secretary Pildegovics said that cooperation with Central Asia is one of Latvia’s priorities for its Presidency of the Council of the European Union and highlighted, amongst other things, the importance of achieving sustainable development. Scientific and educational cooperation and exchanges between teachers and researchers in Latvia and those in Central Asia is one of the cornerstones for common efforts.
Andrejs Pildegovics mentioned the shared concerns related to environmental pollution and management of the Aral Sea and the Baltic Sea resources, including the drying up of the Aral Sea, which can provide a basis for fruitful cooperation in the field of environment.
The book was co-authored by environmental researchers and scientists from Latvia and Uzbekistan with generous financial assistance from the Norwegian government. The publication is being used as a textbook for a course, “Environment and Sustainable Development”, which is mandatory for master degree students in Uzbekistan.
The audience included the Ambassadors of Norway and Uzbekistan to Latvia, Under-Secretary of State of the Ministry of Environmental Protection and Regional Development, Alda Ozola, and the authors of the book.
