The annual award for achievement demanding public respect – the Cicero – has been awarded to two pillars of the education system – Ivars Kalvins (Director, Latvian Institute of Organic Synthesis) and Marcis Auzins (Rector, University of Latvia, LU), reports LETA.

The annual "anti-award", known as the Murphy, went to the Ministry of Health.

Professor Janis Stradins, at the ceremony yesterday, said that Kalvins is being singled out in the international category for outstanding contribution to preparation of globally recognized medication. Stradins called Kalvins Latvia's "most successful and productive scientist."

Marcis Auzins is being honored in the national category for his "goal-oriented efforts to make LU a scientific research institution."

As for the "non-achievement" award, the Murphy, 20 nominees were reviewed, but the jury chose the Ministry of Health for "systematic failure to implement reforms in the sector."

As Prof. Stradins pointed out: "The Murphy diploma will be presented to the new minister of health, Guntis Belevics, with a wish for him to perform like Hercules and clean up the Augean stables in order to receive the Cicero Award in years to come."
