Several hundred teachers participate in rally at Latvian Saeima

Print versionSeveral hundred teachers gathered before the Saeima building in Riga this morning in order to protest against low wages, informs LETA.

The teachers had prepared posters featuring slogans demanding higher funding for and increased focus on the education sector.
Several people had arrived from Jurmala, Liepaja, and various towns across Latvia.
The protesters also rolled out a red carpet for the deputies. The rally went relatively peacefully.
Several dozen police officers observed the rally.
As reported, the board of the Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees decided to organize a rally at the Saeima building on December 11, demanding higher salaries for teachers across the board.
The rally was streamed live on the Latvian Trade Union of Education and Science Employees' website.
