The noted American analyst and expert on the Soviet Union, Paul Goble, is drawing attention to U.S. Assistant Secretary of State for European and Eurasian Affairs Victoria Nuland's statements made during her recent visit in Latvia, that "Americans are prepared to die for Latvia", cites LETA.

"When the Ukrainian crisis began, some commentators in the West suggested that NATO in the end would not rush to defend the Baltic countries even though they are full members, asking: "Who is prepared to die for Narva?"" Goble writes.

"But now, a senior U.S. State Department has given a clear and unequivocal answer: Western countries are," Goble writes, referring to Nuland's recent statements during her visit in Latvia.

"When NATO and the U.S. as part of NATO, welcomed new members into the alliance, this meant that we are ready to participate in the defense of the security of these countries, and this means that we are ready to give our lives," said Nuland.

"That is why there are young American soldiers in Latvia right now, Nuland continued, suggesting that there should be "absolute clarity, that if someone attacks Latvia, we will be here to help defend it because no one has the right to shoot at Latvia, just as no one has the right to shoot at NATO territory."
