14 percent of the Latvian population are not admitted to election

Andrey Mamikins, Member of Europena Parliament from Latvia, Brussels, 01.06.2017.Print version
Speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Brussels about non-citizens who once again will not be able to vote in local government elections on June 3.

Dear colleagues!

Many in Western Europe were surprised to see the political events in Hungary, in Poland, when nationalistic political forces came to power and started to attack European projects.

It contradicts westerner’s memories of huge manifestation of people in Eastern Europe in eighties that protested against the old undemocratic power and demanded freedom and democracy.

Dear Western European colleagues.

Among those people who took part in these manifestations were not only democrats, but also a lot of nationalists who were unsatisfied with old order. Their aim was not to establish democratic society, but to clear the way to power. They killed the dragon because they wanted themselves to become a dragon, but not because they wanted democratic changes.

In my country Latvia in two days there will be local elections in which 14 percent of the population with the status the Latvian aliens are not admitted. These people for a quarter of a century were not entitled to participate in any elections. It happens in the EU country and many of you don’t want to see this inconvenient and ugly reality. Why? Colleagues, why? Because it contradicts your perceptions of success.

Wake up colleagues, and see the reality! You have blindly supported nationalists and now you receive the results. Boomerangs are returning.
