New book published in U.S. about a Latvian woman in Soviet Latvia

BC, Riga, 03.07.2013.Print version
A new book has been published in the United States called "Biruta's Garden of Stories: A Latvian Odyssey", which is about a Latvian woman's personal account of life in Soviet Latvia, LETA was informed by the Latvian Occupation Museum's public relations department.

The presentation of the book in Latvia will take place on July 5 from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the Museum of the Occupation of Latvia in Old Town Riga. Those in attendance will also have the opportunity to meet with the book's author Biruta Blumberga.

The book has been translated in English.

''For five decades after WWII, Latvia lay forgotten behind the "Iron Curtain". The lives and struggles of its people were thoroughly hidden from the world outside the Soviet Union. This collection of short stories presents an unvarnished portrait of life in Latvia during those times; times when a proud and productive people were subjected to the brutal whims of an oppressive and savage regime; a regime that actively sought to annihilate a people, its traditions, its values, its ancient culture. Blumberga's stories offer a cinematic account of these times; as if shot through a sharp Latvian lens,'' the book's publisher writes.
