Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet said that Sunday's parliamentary elections in Ukraine are an important step for the country's future, reports BC the foreign ministry press department.

"The people of Ukraine have democratically expressed their will, having made a clear choice in the direction of further integration with Europe and thereby created conditions for profound changes. Now the country's leaders must follow up with an extensive process of reforms and fight against corruption," Paet said.

According to international observers, despite the difficult situation, Ukraine's parliamentary elections were democratic, transparent and complied with international requirements.

Foreign Minister Paet stated that following the approval of the election results, it is important for Ukraine to move forward with the formation of a government. "The Ukrainian state and newly elected parliament face major political and economic reforms, which are the basis for the further pro-European and democratic development of the country," the Foreign Minister said. "Estonia is ready to support Ukraine with its reform experience," he added.

Due to the occupation of Crimea and the activities of illegal military groups in Eastern Ukraine, it was unfortunately not possible to organise elections in 12 constituencies of Sevastopol and Crimea and 15 constituencies in the Donbass district and therefore 27 seats of the Upper Rada will initially remain unfilled. It is important to ensure that local elections in certain areas of the Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts will be carried out according to Ukrainian legislation, as agreed in the Minsk protocol.
