Ukraine urges Latvia to participate in court proceedings against Russia as a third party

BC, Riga, 30.09.2014.Print version
Ukraine plans to officially turn to Latvia requesting it to get involved, as a third party, in three cases that Ukraine has filed against Russia in the European Court of Human Rights, Ukrainian Justice Ministry announced on Monday, reports KORRESPONDENT/LETA.

Ukrainian Justice Minister Pavlo Petrenko made the announcement during a meeting with Latvian Justice Minister Gaidis Berzins in Ukraine.

"It is very important to us, as it will be an important political message that Europe and the European Union are not leaving us alone with Russia, also in regard to court proceedings," Petrenko said.

Berzins indicated that he sees no reason why Latvia would refuse to get involved in the process.

The European Court of Human Rights is currently reviewing three cases that Ukraine has filed against Russia – over the annexation of Crimea, abduction and transportation of Ukrainian children to Russia, and Russia's travel ban against the Tatar leader Mustafa Dzhemilev.
