Paet: no signal suggests that Russia stalls border treaty

BC, Tallinn, 18.09.2014.Print version
Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Paet hopes that the Russian State Duma that returned from summer holidays will soon start the Estonian-Russian border treaty ratification process, LETA/Public Broadcasting reports.

Paet said that the last contacts with Russian colleagues in relation to the border treaty took place in summer, when Russia made its internal coordination procedures to send these drafts to the parliament for ratification.

"The Russian parliament was also on summer vacation, and to my knowledge only yesterday started activities after the summer vacation. Therefore the Russian government has not had anything to present for proceedings. No messages have come from the Russian side that they would intend to somehow hold back that process now," said Paet at the briefing in the Riigikogu.

Paet stated that Estonia has given a clear message that the Estonian parliament conducted the first reading in the ratification process.

"The second reading and final vote comes after the Russian side has at least started proceedings in its parliament," said Paet.

"Hopefully, in the near future we will see how the Russian side it moves forward with the ratification," he added.
