Kalniete: Mogherini avoiding using the term ''war'' when talking about events Ukraine

BC, Riga, 03.09.2014.Print version
European Parliament Member Sandra Kalniete, who is also a member of the EP's Foreign Affairs Committee, told LETA that during today's committee meeting in Brussels, the newly appointed EU foreign affairs chief Federica Mogherini refrained from using the terms ''Russian invasion'' or ''war'' when describing the current events in Ukraine.

Federica Mogherini.

Kalniete pointed out that several MPs wished Mogherini to answer questions regarding a sentence written in one of Italy's EU presidency documents – ''to promote the EU-Russia partnership''.

''Mogherini confirmed that this sentence has been taken out of the Italian presidency's program, as Russia can no more be seen as a strategic partner of the EU. This was a clear enough answer from her. At the same time, Mogherini refrained from using ''Russian invasion'' or ''war'' when speaking about the event in Ukraine. She used words that are very similar, but ones that also cannot be qualified as clear terms as ''invasion'' and ''war'','' Kalniete believes.

As reported, this past July, when Mogherini was put forward by Italy for the post of EU foreign affairs chief, many countries expressed their concern that she is too favorable towards Russia, and that she it too inexperienced in foreign affairs.
