Rinkevics in Moldova: Eastern Partnership Summit in Riga will be pivotal

BC, Riga, 02.09.2014.Print version
On 1 September, the Latvian Foreign Minister Edgars Rinkevics took part in the meeting of the EU ministers’ Group for the European Action of Moldova [Le Groupe pour l'Action Européenne de la République de Moldova], which was held in Chisinau, Moldova, reports Latvian MFA.

The ministers voiced strong support for Moldova's aspirations of integration with the European Union and discussed putting into practice the EU-Moldova Association Agreement signed on 27 June.

The Latvian Foreign Minister Rinkevics characterized the EU-Moldova Association Agreement, which also provides for setting up a deep and comprehensive free trade area, as a major achievement. This attests to the progress Moldova has made. The Minister called on Moldovan government officials to continue the reform process, especially in the justice sector, and in the areas related to media freedom and fighting corruption. Edgars Rinkevics also welcomed the establishment of visa-free travel between Moldova and the Schengen Area states, which will facilitate people-to-people contacts and strengthen business and cultural ties.

Foreign Minister Rinkevics put particular emphasis on the importance of the Eastern Partnership Summit to be held during the Latvian Presidency of the Council of the EU. “The Riga Summit will be a pivotal moment for the Eastern partnership policy as a whole. The Eastern Partnership policy requires a-tailor-made approach, linked to each partner’s achievements and wishes”. The Summit will also be an opportunity to assess the provisional results of the implementation of association agreements with the Eastern Partnership countries.

The EU-Moldova Association Agreement was signed on 27 June this year, and Latvia was one of the first EU member states to ratify it.
