Two days ago the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) adopted a resolution condemning annexation of Crimea by Russia, and suspended voting rights of the Russian delegation yesterday, informs LETA/ELTA, referring to Respublika.

However, representatives of the Lithuanian delegation who participated at the session stated that PACE has given in to Russian pressure and acted disproportionately in response to Russian threat by not daring to remove the aggressor from the organisation.

The Assembly which promotes cooperation of the European countries in the area of human rights and democracy unites 47 countries, most of which are not members of the EU.

Member of Parliament Gediminas Jakavonis who participated in yesterday's session of PACE in Strasbourg told the daily Respublika that the European politicians seemed to have awakened and at first and were leaning to take on serious sanctions, i.e. to remove Russia from the organisation and isolate it from decision making. Nonetheless, Jakavonis said that "pragmatic thinking" of the major states prevailed once again and the initiative of the delegations of the Eastern European countries was defeated.
