Grybauskaite: all EU leaders saw different Ukrainian president

BC, Vilnius, 03.01.2014.Print version
Lithuania's President Dalia Grybauskaite does not tend to blame it only on Russia that Ukraine did not sign the Association Agreement with the EU at the Vilnius Eastern Partnership Summit. According to the president, the current Ukrainian government gave in to that pressure for certain reasons, informs LETA.

"I do not want to blame it only on Russia. External pressure is not enough. If there is political will to resist it, external pressure has not much influence. However, it is likely that the current Ukrainian government gave in to that pressure for certain reasons. As a result, the responsibility falls firstly on the government which showed that it does not really understand what European integration is, what the free trade agreement means, since it was said that this agreement supposedly would bring much harm to Ukraine. Huge compensations were demanded," said Grybauskaite in an interview with magazine IQ.

According to the Lithuanian president, all EU leaders saw a different President of the country Viktor Yanukovych, and many leaders were disappointed with his position.

"Not only because of not signing the Association Agreement, but also of his position on the EU, towards free trade agreement. An opinion was expressed that the trust in Yanukovych has almost vanished. EU leaders left with a different opinion about the position of the Ukrainian president on the EU. In terms of this, the Vilnius Summit was very useful, since it revealed what is what," said Grybauskaite.
