Makei: Belarus prepares "asymmetric sanctions" for Baltics

BC, Vilnius/Riga/Tallinn, 03.09.2020.Print version
Minsk has prepared "asymmetric sanctions" for Baltic states in response to the entry ban imposed on its officials by Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia for falsifying the result of Belarus' presidential elections and clamping down on peaceful protests, informed KOMMERSANT/LETA.

Belarusian Foreign Minister Vladimir Makei said at a news conference in Moscow following a meeting with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov that a black list of individuals from the Baltic states has already been agreed upon but that Belarus would not make it public.

The Belarusian sanctions will apply to persons "who have been especially fervently trying to interfere in the internal affairs of the Belarusian state, who have made unacceptable political statements, and who have made concrete proposals on financially supporting opponents of the administration," Makei said.

He indicated that the Belarusian sanctions will also be effective in Russian territory.

On Monday, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia announced national sanctions against Lukashenko and another 29 high-ranking Belarusian officials, banning them from entering the Baltic countries.

The European Union is also considering sanctions against the Minsk regime.
