Lithuanian MFA: Kremlin's critic urges EU ministers support Russia's civil society

BC, Vilnius, 16.10.2017.Print version
Vladimir Kara-Murza, a prominent critic of the Kremlin, on Monday urged European Union (EU) ministers to maintain contacts with Russia's civil society and intellectuals, says Lithuania's Foreign Minister Linas Linkevicius who organized the meeting, informs LETA/BNS.

The working breakfast held in Luxembourg prior to the meeting of the European Council involved five ministers, including Britain's diplomacy chief Boris Johnson.

"I said in my opening remarks that we should see the difference between Russia and the Kremlin. Kara-Murza elaborated on the topic and wanted to convey an alternative attitude, without asking for any financial assistance or assistance to replace the government, emphasizing it was the matter of Russian citizens. The only thing he asked for is to follow the principles and values, as well as maintain contacts with Russia's civil society and help the cultural intellectuals," Linkevicius told BNS in a telephone interview from Luxembourg.

The Monday's meeting of EU ministers should focus on the Iran nuclear program agreement. On Friday, US President Donald Trump accused Iran of violating the 2005 pact. In Linkevicius' words, EU ministers should express support to the agreement.
