Maizitis believes Russian intelligence services will attempt to meddle in local government elections

In an interview to the respected weekly news and current affairs magazine Ir, Constitutional Protection Bureau director Janis Maizitis said that there is a good possibility that Russian intelligence services will attempt to meddle in the upcoming local government elections in Latvia citing LETA.

''We do not have direct evidence regarding the local government elections, but this is very likely. It is possible that some candidates will be compromised, and propaganda activities will be carried out. It is important that there is already a discussion in the public space about lies and fake news. In such a way, these instruments could be made less effective,'' Maizitis said.

He also admitted that Latvia could experience something similar to what happened during the U.S. presidential election, when presidential candidate Hillary Clinton's campaign was hacked.

Maizitis said that this is a very possible scenario, and there have been enough examples of such activities the past year. He added that not only politicians and officials, but journalists must also be very careful.
