No official comments yet on possible change of Latvian ambassador to Russia

Latvia’s former ambassador to NATO Maris Riekstins, who is now the Foreign Ministry’s inspector general, might become Latvia’s next ambassador to Russia, but this report is not being officially commented for now, writes LETA.

Riekstins told LETA that he cannot confirm the report, which the Foreign Ministry also declined to comment. President Raimonds Vejonis’ press office would not reveal whether Latvia planned to appoint a new ambassador to Russia soon. The president is on vacation at present and his next week’s agenda will be released later.

The Saeima Foreign Affairs Committee traditionally decides on such matters at closed meetings and could not give any comments either.

Meanwhile, unofficial reports suggest that Riekstins has been chosen to replace Latvia’s current Ambassador to Russia Astra Kurme who will be assigned to work in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The reports were carried earlier by Latvian Television.

Kurme became Latvian Ambassador to Russia at the end of 2013, which means that the time has come for Latvia to rotate its ambassador.
