Estonia to conduct asylum proceeding of Russian hacker as usual

BC, Tallinn, 08.02.2017.Print version
According to Foreign Minister Sven Mikser Estonian authorities are to conduct the proceeding of the asylum request of a member of the Russian group of hackers, Shaltai Boltai, as usual, reports LETA/BNS.

When talking about Estonia's asylum policy, we will look at each case individually and mainly based on two criteria: whether a person is entitled to be granted asylum, whether his life and health is really in danger, and whether all the necessary criteria for being granted asylum have been fulfilled," Mikser said at a press conference on Tuesday. He added that it will also be checked that the person does not pose a threat to Estonia's security.

The British business daily Financial Times reported on Monday that it talked to a member of Shaltai Boltai in Tallinn who intends to seek asylum in Estonia.

"As far as I know, no application or other document regarding the case has reached the government," Mikser said. He added that since he has no additional information regarding the case he will not speculate about the topic.

A spokesperson for the Police and Border Guard Board (PPA) told  that an asylum application proceeding is not public information, therefore the PPA cannot comment on it. She added that whether asylum is granted is the decision of PPA, not the government.

According to the Financial Times the Russian hacker believes he is the group's last member at large as all the other members have been jailed on espionage allegations.
