BC, Tallinn, 21.11.2016.Print version
Estonia's good neighborly relations with Russia would mostly mean closer economic ties and cultural cooperation, candidate prime minister Juri Ratas said, writes LETA/BNS.

In the current situation "they are mainly connected with the economy and to some extent with culture as well," Ratas said in answer to MPs' questions on Monday.

As a good example of cultural cooperation, Ratas singled out guest performances of the Estonian National Opera in Moscow at the same time as the Moscow-based Helikon Opera was giving performances in Tallinn.

"It goes without saying that we need better economic relations. All entrepreneurs, in particular those based in southeastern Estonia, are speaking about it," added Ratas, admitting that Finland has managed to achieve better economic relations with Russia for the time being.

The Riigikogu on Monday voted to grant Center Party chairman Juri Ratas powers to form Estonia's next government.

Ratas was backed for prime minister with votes 53 - 33, with seven abstentions and five MPs out of 101 not present. Three MPs did not vote.

The government coalition of the Center Party, the Social Democratic Party and the Pro Patria and Res Publica Union has 56 seats in the parliament.
